Prep school and boarding: the earlier pathway
For families thinking a stage ahead, the prep route has its own admissions process — and its own timeline.
Prep school is not a detour from college recruiting. For some players it is the recruiting strategy — a stronger league, more exposure, and a year of physical and academic development.
Why families choose it
- Competition — a higher level of play, and more coaches watching it
- Academics — a structured environment and stronger course offerings
- Time — an extra year of development before college decisions
- Exposure — boarding and prep leagues are recruited directly
What the process looks like
Prep admissions runs like a smaller version of college admissions, on its own calendar:
- School fit — day vs boarding, league, academic profile, location
- Testing — typically the SSAT (or ISEE), planned months ahead
- Application — essays, recommendations, transcripts
- Interview and visit — often weighted more than families expect
- Decisions and deposits — usually early in the calendar year
Two things families get wrong
- Starting the SSAT late. Testing is the item with the least flexibility.
- Assuming prep delays recruiting. A well-chosen prep year usually advances it, because it puts the player in front of more coaches.
If your player is aiming at a prep or boarding school, treat the timeline as one year earlier than the college timeline you already know.
Where it fits
Prep is the same disciplined path, one stage earlier — same questions about fit, academics and cost, applied to high school instead of college.
