How college soccer recruiting actually works
Who starts the conversation, what coaches are really looking at, and why film and academics decide more than most families expect.
Recruiting is not a tryout. It is a multi-year conversation that a coach starts, and that your family earns the right to be part of.
The five things the NCAA itself says to understand
- Coaches initiate most recruiting conversations. Your job is to be findable and to be worth finding.
- Exposure matters — campus, film, and club participation.
- Academics are part of the recruiting decision, not a separate track.
- Communication rules vary by division and by grade level.
- Coaches can check whether a player has registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center.
What counts as recruiting
The NCAA treats all of the following as recruiting activity:
- calls, texts and emails from a coach
- social-media messages
- a coach visiting your high school
- a campus visit (especially an expense-paid official visit)
- an offer of athletics aid
Once a coach is doing these things, your family is in the process — and the paperwork starts to matter.
Who should be driving
The NCAA's own guidance is blunt: parents often lead in 9th and 10th grade, but by 11th and 12th grade the player should own the communication. Coaches notice which families are player-led.
The single most common mistake is a parent writing emails that a coach knows the player didn't write.
What coaches are actually evaluating
Four things, in roughly this order of first impression:
- Technical — first touch, passing range, finishing
- Tactical — decision-making, positioning, game understanding
- Physical — speed, endurance, strength for the position
- Academic and character — eligibility, grades, coachability, team fit
Film is how a coach forms the first three opinions before ever seeing your player in person. That is why a clean, current reel matters more than a long one.
Recruiting calendars and signing dates
When a coach may contact a player, and when a player may sign, are governed by recruiting calendars and signing periods that vary by sport and division. They change. Check the current calendar for your sport before planning anything around a date.
What this means for your family
- Build the reel early — it unlocks every other step.
- Keep the academics on track; eligibility is decided by courses taken years earlier.
- Register with the Eligibility Center so a coach can confirm you.
- Let the player own the outreach by 11th grade.
We track all of this against your player's actual timeline and run the outreach with you — see how Valeo FC and First Eleven help on this shelf.
This is information, not advice. Eligibility and financial-aid rules change. Confirm the current rules with the NCAA Eligibility Center, the school, or a financial-aid office before you act on anything here.
